David M. Churchill is a prolific Maryland artist whose professional career spans three decades. Beginning as a self-taught painter in 1971, Mr. Churchill mastered the difficult and challenging medium of watercolor early in his artistic career. Twenty years ago, he incorporated a centuries-old egg tempera technique in his innovative approach to painting which has allowed him to push the theoretical limits of his water-based medium. By using an emulsion of egg yolk and water with professional grade Windsor & Newton watercolor pigments, he is able to impart a pearl-like, translucent quality to his paintings which would not be possible with the standard techniques used by other watercolor painters. He is considered by many to be one of the most innovative practitioners of the medium of egg tempera on paper in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Mr. Churchill is an honors graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.A. in English / art. As an undergraduate, he received rigorous instruction in drawing, sculpture, and design that stressed the classical approach to the human figure. This intensive training in drawing and design established the strong foundation upon which he constructs his intricately detailed and remarkably realistic renderings of rural Maryland and Pennsylvania.

However, it wasn't until his first visit in 1970 to the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, that his commitment to becoming a painter crystallized. Studying the pencil drawings, watercolors, and drybrush paintings of Andrew Wyeth, and later the egg tempera paintings of New England artist Robert Vickery, provided Churchill with the conviction that he could become a major artist if he were willing to commit the time and energy, and to impose the self-discipline required, to achieve this goal. His considerable accomplishments to date speak for themselves.
